Tibetan people celebrate Saga Dawa festival on the 15th day of the 4th of Tibetan month and it is considered one of the most important religious festivals in Tibet . Saga Dawa festival is observed to commemorate the three different stages of the life of Gautam the Buddha namely birth, death and enlightenment. As this festival falls on the holiest month of Tibetan calendar, people believe that their good deeds and prayers during this festival get multiplied in thousand fold. Therefore, it is common to see people praying and trying to please God through good deeds.

Many people refrain from killing animals and extend their helping hands whoever asks for during the fourth month of the calendar. You feel privileged to be the part of this festival if you are in Tibet during this festival. You can join the huge crowds that visit the Dzongyab Lukhang Park at the foot of Potala for a late afternoon picnic. They celebrate it every year as a ritual.

The one more interesting event that takes place during this Saga festival is the Tarboche flagpole replacing exercise. People gather here from the all parts of Tibet for this annual event. They attach small prayer flags with the big flag which comes up with the combined help of onlookers that come to observe this event. It is really fascinating event as it used to be presided over by Dalai Lama from the nearby monastery in the past.
